Model Scale Aerodynamic Wind TunnelA cost-effective method of evaluating styling themesThe model wind tunnel is a powerful aerodynamic development tool. Many scale prototype models can be tested early on the development programme, allowing styling themes and designs to be assessed from the beginning without the need for full scale build. Many products from the rail and automotive industries, as well as structural and industrial equipment benefit from this testing.Using a model wind tunnel, much of the data gathered from a full scale wind tunnel test can be collated but by using scale models typically 30% - 40% of the actual size. These can either be stylists' clay models, milled foam from CAD/CAM data, fibre glass/carbon fibre or a combination.
The following information can be obtained: The model tunnel also benefits from a moving ground plane. As the greatest potential for aerodynamic improvement for current cars comes from optimising the underside, the tunnel can operate with both a moving ground and rotating wheels. This has significant advantages when developing racing cars.
