Transport Minister Previews High-Tech Facility 21 June 2006 |
Throughout Dr. Ladyman's visit to MIRA, the Minister showed great interest in a number of high-tech facilities used to make vehicles safer, including: the crash laboratory, pedestrian protection laboratory and the new HVSAC (EMC 9)
"The Government is committed to making our roads even safer for all road users. The technologies I have seen demonstrated today will undoubtedly play a vital role in ensuring that our road's safety record continues to improve," noted the Minister.
The highpoint of the tour included a Ministerial preview of MIRA's latest facility the Heavy Vehicle Semi Anechoic Chamber (designated EMC 9: Heavy vehicle semi anechoic chamber) - the UK's only EMC chamber with a 70 ton floor loading capacity, due to open on July 4th.

MIRA already boasts the largest suite of automotive EMC test facilities in Europe employing over 50 qualified technical staff. EMC Manager, Peter Phillips, states: " The operation of HVSAC will create 5 new full time positions and take our annual test capability to 20,000 hours through our 9 test laboratories" The $1.5-million-plus investment reaffirms MIRA's position as Europe's leading vehicle design, development & certification centre.
Before leaving, Dr Ladyman drove around a selection of MIRA's 57 miles of test track, including the banked high-speed circuit and the specialised surfaces of the wet grip circuit. While taking the wheel of the the Minister learnt of MIRA's pivotal role in the safety systems development of the recently launched supercar.
