MIRA helps SAVE-U project improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists

17 May 2004

MIRA's expertise in developing pedestrian safety systems for vehicles has been called upon by a European Commission research project. Launched on 1st March 2002, and scheduled for completion on 28th February 2005, SAVE-U is an 8-million-Euro project set-up to develop and assess new pedestrian and cyclist detection systems. This system will be based on the fusion of three sensor technologies:

. Vision systems - for angular measuring
. Radar blending - for distance measuring
. Thermal imaging - for body heat

About 200,000 pedestrians and cyclists are injured in road accidents across Europe each year. 9,000 are killed. The objective is to combine the three technologies into an integrated system which could help reduce the number of accidents on European roads. Saving lives and reducing the number of crippling injuries.

The project consortium is being led by Faurecia and supported by Siemens VDO, two laboratories (LETI and LIST) from the French Atomic Energy Commission, vehicle manufacturers DaimlerChrysler and Volkswagen, and of course MIRA, whose main role is to develop methodologies for assessing the systems and then test the vehicles equipped with it.

MIRA's involvement with research into life-saving new technologies is not limited to this project. We are a key partner in the Government-funded Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) project which is assessing speed-restriction systems in vehicles and MIRA's expertise is also called upon in many other Government-funded and European research projects looking at a whole range of new vehicle technologies.
