ASCAR - Team Westec close in on the championship lead with pole position & race win

8 August 2005

Michael Vergers excelled himself, winning in his NEC / Aspire / XN120 Team West-Tec Chevrolet at Rockingham on 6th and 7th August 2005. But as any motorsport insider will testify, the hard work in the closed season is what drives on-track success when the lights go out on race day.

MIRA's expertise in racecar development using the Kinematics and Compliance rig coupled with proving ground validation have left the team with a chassis capable of delivering the grip and feel the drivers need at 175mph! Key to the cars relentless speed is the aerodynamic optimization conducted in the Full Scale Wind Tunnel. In oval racing where speeds rarely drop below 150mph, the right aero set up makes all the difference !

Qualifying: Getting on track late in the qualifying session, Vergers immediately lapped in the low 36's to take a dominating pole position. "The team worked hard and when Michael took to the track he just nailed it," said team boss Gavin Wills.

RACE 1: From the start Vergers ran 'two wide' for the first lap and a half with 2004 Champion Stevie Hodgson, in the Xerox Torquespeed car, before falling to second.

Super quick tyre changing from the Westec crew had vergers back out and in the lead mid-way through the race, which boiled down to a scrap between Vergers, Hodgson, Championship leader John Mickel and #88 Team West-Tec driver Oli Playle.

After some enthralling racing, a photo finish proved Mickel came through to pip Vergers for the win on the line. Disappointed with second place, Vergers commented: "I had a good start and our pitstop was awesome, but my second set of tyres was not so good, although it was a very, very good battle."

RACE 2: Saw Vergers start on the outside of the front row. In a lights to flag victory the blue NEC machine was never headed - and never looked like being headed.

A race stoppage for a big lower order crash failed to divert Vergers from the win that he duly took after the restart and yet another impressive pitstop; eventually winning by almost 5 seconds.

After the race Verger was unsurprisingly bullish, quipping "The NEC Team West-Tec crew were fantastic all weekend and I'm going to need a bigger trophy cabinet."

Vergers, in second place in the chase for the Championship is poised just five points behind Hodgson. With four races to go, things are starting to hot up down at Rockingham!
