CE Marking DirectivesEuropean Council Directives (EEC) mandate that products offered for sale or brought into service in Europe must comply with the Member State's requirements prescribed in all relevant CE marking directives. CE marking directives relating to specific topics require EU Member States to appoint Notified (Type A Inspection Body) and Competent Bodies to evaluate and approve products against the requirements identified in each Directive. Such bodies must be accredited against the essential requirements of EN 45004 and EN 45011 and their appointment notified to the European Commission. There must be demonstrable independence between a Notified Body and any activity associated with the design, manufacture, supply, installation, purchase, ownership, use or maintenance of items inspected. Notified BodiesNotified Bodies are appointed by the UK Department of Trade and Industry to evaluate, test and approve products under the directives for CE marking.
